Tom Uglow from Google Creative Lab popped by our London offices today for a show and tell session. And what a treat it was, a presentation that was delivered with genuine charm, packed with passion and some great insights.

Below are some of the key points which I took away with me and some project highlights:

“Tell” not “Sell”
Passion driven projects are personal, emotional and can not be manufactured
Make something physical and tangible now and then
What if…?
Draw parallels.
Work in the unknown.

Ralph Lauren 4D Experience

Ralph Lauren’s latest event claims to be “the world’s first 4D experience” and “the ultimate collision of fashion, art and technology”. Executed by a combination of projection mapping, green screen footage on their two flag ship stores in NYC and London.

Stumbled upon a mesmorising collection of work: Book Sculptures by Jacquline Rush Lee, with some stunning pieces which I’d love to have as a centre piece in my living room.

In the artist’s own words:

“I am particularly drawn to objects that record physical processes or bear the imperfections and scars of life. Intuitively chosen, these objects suggest layered metaphors of knowledge and corporeality as an embodiment of the transitory nature of the body, thoughts, memories, or one’s life experiences.”

“…recycled books come with their own histories of use and meaning and how they serve as potent vehicles of expression”

“By scrambling the formal arrangement of the book and transposing its material and conceptual qualities, I aim to create evocative art forms that suggest an alternative narrative.”

With all the hype and experiments on 3D object projection mapping, this is one of the best examples I’ve seen in a while…

“On the site of a thousand years of violent history, ACDC were pitted against Iron Man in a ground breaking architectural projection mapping project. The front facade of the Great Keep at Rochester Castle, was brought to life using the latest in 3D animation techniques. This onslaught of the senses, saw the castle confront it’s ultimate challenge. Warping, morphing, spewing and collapsing before the audiences eyes. Let there be rock!”

Logorama

Logorama is a 16-minute short animated film written and directed by H5/ François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, and produced by Autour de Minuit which is definately worth watching. A universe and its inhabitants created entirely from globally recognised brand names and symbols which won the Prix Kodak at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.^[1]
